Kalaguru Bishnu Prashad Rabha-The Son Assam will never forget

On 31st January 1909 when India was under the British rule one man was born in Dhaka,Bangladesh(Then in India). He was the Legend who contributed so much to the assamese (অসমীয়া) literature that it will take me weeks to write about it.

That man is Kalaguru Bishnu prashad Rabha(কলাগুৰু বিষ্ণু প্ৰসাদ ৰাভা)
Swarder bahadur gopal chandra mushahari was his father. Kalaguru(কলাগুৰু)means The Guru of Art which he truly is. He was an artists known for his poems and Songs which are now known as Rabha Sangeet(Rabha's Songs) in Assam.

He did his schooling in Tezpur Government High School and after that went to Calcutta(Now kolkata) for further education. After completing his ISC exam from St. Paul's Cathedral Mission College and later joined the Ripon College and got his BSC degree from there.

He had done wonders multiple fields of literature and arts. He was actor, painter, dancer, musiccomposer, poet, dramatist, writer, singer, surprisingly he mattered in every field he step foot on for which he was given the name Kalaguru. Though his father Sawrdar Bahudar Gopal Chandra Musahari was a Policemen for British he never should any interest in that area and persuade his dreams of India's Independence and sending messages to the masses through his music and writings.

His music and writings influence not Assam but the whole Nation to fight for India's freedom from not only British Rule but also from slavery, poverty and other social evils. As he once said "I am fighting for a revolution from the realm of necessity to the realm of freedom".

He was always an active member of the Communist Party of India(CPI) and later also joined the armed revolutionary movement Revolutionary Communist Party of India(RCPI) and dedicated his whole life for India's Independence.

He had a heart of gold for which he donated his ancestral estate of about 2500 Bigha land to the peasants. His beloved wife Kanaklata died of illness due to lack proper treatment because of shortage of money. But even after this he didn't gave up and sticked to his principles. His slogan was "Haal Jaar Maati Taar" ("হাল যাৰ মাতি তাৰ") which means "those who cultivate should own the land". The Tezpur Central University stands on the land he donated. His speeches touched the heart of lakhs of people and influenced many to follow his part as he was a leader by birth. He led many many masses in the freedom movements.

After the death of Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, he became the president of the Assam branch of Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA). But he never liked the idea of being the leader as he always believed in giving power at the hands of the people. After India got independence in 1947 he was elected an M.L.A(Member of Legislative Assembly) for a term in 1969 from Tezpur(Now in Sonitpur District of Assam).

The multi talented  and freedom fighter Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha had a great impact on assamses culture even till date. Most of the singing competitions of Assam of Kids to adults are named Bishnu Rabha Sangeet. He composed more than 100 songs and even on his death bed he wrote a song "E Mur Hekh Gaan" which means this is my last song. He created a new genre of singing. And most of his songs  were about Nature,Peasants,Revolts of workers and also about India's  struggle  for independence. He also performed  many dramas in the  Ban Theatre  of Tezpur which said to be the oldest Cultural  Activity Centre of North East.

He had also a Film Director, Music Composer and an excellent  Actor. But he didn't  left for Kolkata or Mumbai for a career there which would have done wonders for his personal life but instead he choosed the stay in Assam and promote and train the talent here.

Painting was one of his many talent  which he was very good at. Some of his paintings  can be still seen in his residence  of Tezpur.

To honour this Great personality  The Assam Government named an Award after him called Bishnu Rabha Award to promote new talents and honuor the veteran artists of Assam every year.
