NALBARI- The Name is the Feeling

Hello folks.
The Assamese corner  is bringing you a lot of things Assam is famous for which you may or may not knew. I hope you found it interesting. Today i will be writing about Nalbari District of Assam which is my hometown. So I am a proud Nalbaria Api(Girl) i would like to bring you something interesting about this historical place.

    Nalbari town is the capital of Nalbari District which has the Headquarters and Municipal board of the district. First lets know how the Nalbari got its name. Nal means reed plant and bari usually refers to small grounds for plantation usually on the backyard of houses.

    History of nalbari goes back to centuries before christ as Arthashastra of Kautilya mentioned mentioned about products from nalbari being imported to various places. There is a small village named Suvarnakundya nearby Nalbari town which produced finest silk of Kautilya's times and also produced a special kind of perfume.

   The western part of Assam was known as Kamrupa till the Pre-Modern period which was divided into Geographic divisions called kamrupa pithas. Nalbari was situated in kamapitha division. In 1985 Nalbari District was formed and separated from modern day Kamrup District.

  Various discoveries of copper plate inscriptions of Kamrupi kings from Nalbari make it an important archeological point.

In the early twenties during British rule a Railway Station of Assam Bengal Railway company was established here which attracted many traders from outside the state,which eventually led to transaction on the railway road of various businesses.

 The modern day Gurdon High School was established in that time by the name Nalbari M.E School. This two events led to the development of the area at a rapid speed and it became an important business centre of Assam. People migrated at huge numbers and slowly after the administrative offices were. Set up it started to look like an Urban area.

 Nalbari college was started in the year 1945 at a temporary basis and later in 1950 it was shifted to the present day location permanently.

    Nalbari is always known for producing great minds in every field. It was mainly because of the importance of education from the very beginning. A number of highly recognized Schools and Colleges are established and still stand tall where every year 100s of students are passed out with flying colours.

Some of them are - Nalbari College, Nalbari; Nalbari Sanskrit College, Nalbari; Nalbari Commerce College, Nalbari; MNC Balika College, Nalbari; Barbhag College, Kamarkuchi; Baska College, Mashalpur; Barkhetri College, Mukalmua; Tihu College, Tihu; Barama College, Barama; Kamrup College, Chamata; Dhamdhama Anchalik College, Dhamdhama; Gyanpeeth Mahavidyalaya; Nalbari Law College, Nalbari; Sankardev Academy, Nalbari, D.S.R.Academy. Along with these there are also some very good Government and Non Government Schools in Nalbari.

    It is always been a tourist attraction to thousands of tourist. Some of the important things are The Planetarium and the Science Centre is located at Sariahtali. The Kamrup Sanskrit Sanjivani Sabha , The 500 year old Billeshwar devalay dedicated to Lord Khrisna, Shripur dewalay mandir,  Basudev devaly, Hari mandir,  Buddhust temple, Jaypal than,  Sonkuriha,   Fenguwa rampart,  Daulashal temple, Thetha gohain,  Bhagheswari dewbahar guri devalay,  ganga pukhuri, mahmara pukhuri,  agradhowa pukhuri, And one of the most important is The Ras Mohotsav of Hari Mandir organized every year which lasts of 11 days is visited by 1000s people from all around the State.

And also Nalbari is a town famous for its bamboo and cane handicrafts, medicinal herbs, rice and tea. You can shop all these items at the local market of the town as souvenir of this place.

Some of the well known people who are from nalbari and are famous in not only India but worldwide are Angoorlata Deka,Member of Legislative Assembly and is the youngest female politician of India and a former Assamese actress.
Bhumidhar Barman a famous politician.
Chandra Mohan Patowary also a politician
Mahadev Deka a body builder and former Mr.Universe.
Seema Biswas who was a famous Bollywood actress all hails from nalbari.

Nalbari has a literacy rate of 80%. In urban area it is 91% and in rural its about 78%. Female and Male both have about 85% literacy rate.
