The world's biggest river island is Majuli(মাজুলী) situated in River Brahmaputra (ব্ৰক্ষ্মপুত্ৰ) in Assam. In the early 20th century the island 880 square kilometers in area, but due to continues soil erosion the island shrunk to 350 square kilometers upto present date.

It is one of the most must visit tourists site of North Eastern part of India. Tourists both domestic and foreign come in a large number every year to visit this beautiful island in the heart of Brahmaputra. It has a population of about 1 Lakheswar 68 thousand which comprises of ethnic groups like Mishing,Ahom,Chutia,Deori, Kabita,Kacharis,Brahmins and many more. Moshing language is spoken most here.

   The only way to reach Majuli is by Ferries and Boats as the bridges are not built till now to connect it from the mainland. The closest way to reach majuli is from Jorhat City.

  It was the capital of the powerful capital of Chutia Kingdom. It was then a long piece of land with Brahmaputra flowing in the north and Burhidihing in the south. But due to the earthquakes in 1661 to 1696 resulted in a flood in 1750 which lasted for about 15 days. It changed a part of Brahmaputra to move southward into Burhidihing's channel and the Island that we see today is formed.

   When Mahapurush (Great Man) Srimanta Sankardev(মহাপুৰুষ শ্ৰীমন্ত শংকৰদেৱ) visited Majuli in the 16th century it has been a cultural capital of Assam since. He was the creator of the Vaishnavism, a monothiest form of Hindu Religion. The Satras (সত্ৰ) were established in the Island which are monasteries and hermitages. And thus it become the epicentre of Vaishnavism till date. It was also under the British Rule when they invaded India.

   The main industry of Majuli is always been Agriculture. More then 100 varieties of rice are produced are grown here without any machineries and artificial fertilizers. Along with it fishing is also an important industry in Majuli.

Namghar(Temple of the Vaishnavism), where the people of the villages gather to sing, pray and to perform religious drama called Bhawna(ভাওঁনা). It is also a place where the meetings of the villages and important decisions like auctioning of fishing rights,Villages monetary matters are discussed and decided.

The main tourist attraction of Majuli are
Migratory birds which comes in numbers,Pottery making,Mask making,
Paal Namm festival,Holi,The sunset in winter season and of course there is the natural beauty of Majuli.

These are some of the few things that makes Majuli great. It is the only River island in the world to be declared as a district. The people,The Cultures,The places,The feasts,The history and all this things make Majuli a must see place if you ever visit Assam.
